Spencer County Middle School
Matt Mercer, Principal
Dear SCMS Families,
The first eight days of school have been absolutely amazing! Thanks to our summer “Boost Camp”, sixth graders already feel at home. Lockers are being opened quickly, hallways are less crowded because each grade level is on a separate schedule, and students are following the dress code and tardy policy. That said, I could not be more pleased with your child’s behavior up to this point.
SCMS is one of the only school districts in the state currently training all students to be leaders. This year we are incorporating “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens” into our daily leadership/reading course during fifth period. Habit one is “Be Proactive”, and I encourage you to research these seven habits and teach them at home as well. We will discuss the ‘Leader In Me’ framework in more detail at our annual Title 1 Parent Involvement Night on September 23 from 5:30 to 7:00.
You may have heard of the friendly homeroom competition currently going on at SCMS. A free Grizzly T-shirt is being given to all students in a homeroom as information packets are completed. There will be no school for students on Labor Day Weekend (August 29th through September 1st) so please get packets returned immediately if you have not done so.
I’m very happy to announce that beginning Monday, our “Grizzlies Beyond the Bell” after school program kicks off. Each week; Monday through Thursday, students can stay after school and participate in dozens of clubs and organizations. Mr. Adams our Superintendent is sponsoring the Archery Club, I will be leading the Running Club, and volunteers will offer: Extreme Frisbee, Cooking, Fantasy Football, Lego Robotics, and Photography to name but a few. This after school service is free of charge, a snack is offered daily, and buses will transport participating students to various delivery points. Students staying after school will attend “Homework Help” prior to clubs and organizations and everyone must register prior to attending.
There will be a Cyber Safety/Anti-Bullying Tactics assembly for all interested parents on February 19 at 6:00pm in our gym. The speaker is Scott Harvey. Please plan to attend this very informative session.
On Thursday, March 5, we will have our spring Parent Information Night (PIN) from 5:30-7:45pm. I look forward to seeing you then!
I sincerely hope that you are as excited about SCMS happenings as we are!
